PeeWee team advances

The Hockey Northwestern Ontario branch championships were held March 14-16 in Kenora.
The Northwestern Ontario all-stars captured the PeeWee division by defeating the Thunder Bay Kings PeeWee ‘AAA’ team by identical 3-2 scores on Friday and Saturday to sweep the best-of-three series.

The NWO PeeWee ‘AAA’ team is comprised of players selected from PeeWee ‘AA’ and ‘A’ teams from throughout Northwestern Ontario, including Fort Frances, Kenora, Dryden, Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, and Ignace.
The squad is led by head coach Dan Reynard of Kenora.
Fort Frances was well-represented by four players from the local Knights of Columbus Peewee ‘AA’ Knights. Forwards Jordan Larson and Colton Spicer were spark plugs on offence.
Spicer was a key contributor on both power plays and penalty kills while Larson received the Player-of-the-Game award on Friday with a goal and an assist.
Defenceman Judd Gardiman was solid both defensively and rushing the puck up ice on offence while goalie Scott Parson faced 26 Kings’ shots on Saturday, helping secure the deciding win.
It was reported that it’s been a full 12 years since a PeeWee team has beaten the Thunder Bay Kings in the branch playdowns.
The NWO all-stars now will compete in the Ontario Provincial PeeWee ‘AAA’ championships March 30-April 5 in Thunder Bay.
The Kings also will be entered as the tourney hosts.
